Wellness Tool: Design a Self-Care Plan

Self-care is about reclaiming control when we need it most. It’s the deliberate choice to pause, turn inward, and create moments that foster contentment. Research shows that self-care can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance quality of life. Its adaptability makes self-care powerful—it can range from small, everyday acts to transformative, luxurious experiences.

Design your self-care plan using this diagram and the following suggested activities as inspiration.

Your Self-Care Plan

Small Self-Care Practices:
  • Declutter your inbox by unsubscribing from unnecessary emails.

  • Take regular breaks during the day.

  • Do an “inbox delete-all” to start fresh.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking more water.

  • Disconnect from social media for a day.

  • Replace worn or outdated clothing.

  • Share a hug with someone.

  • Curate your social media by unfollowing accounts that don’t uplift you.

  • Create a mood-boosting playlist—and dance to it!

  • Take a restorative nap.

  • Vent to someone who will listen.

Regular Self-Care Practices:
  • Journal your thoughts and feelings.

  • Scrapbook or create physical photo albums.

  • Set a reading challenge.

  • Explore breathing techniques for relaxation.

  • Say “yes” only when you truly mean it.

  • Dedicate weekends to unplugging from technology.

  • Meet others who share your hobbies.

  • Develop better sleep hygiene habits.

  • Prioritise routine healthcare and check-ups.

The Grand and the Luxurious:
  • Join or start a community or social group.

  • Volunteer your time for a cause you care about.

  • Begin that hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

  • Seek support through counselling, coaching, or mentoring.

  • Work on challenging negative self-talk.

  • Declutter your space to minimise distractions.

  • Treat yourself to a luxury item that brings you joy, whether it’s a special bubble bath, a favourite book, or a walking group.

  • Plan trips or experiences to break from routine.

  • Take a class or learn something new.

  • Book a series of wellness treatments or sessions.

Practical Tips

1 - Start small: Begin with brief, manageable moments of rest and self-care.

2 - Communicate your needs: Share your intentions with those around you so they can support your efforts to cultivate new, restorative habits.

3 - Tailor self-care to your lifestyle:

Your rest and self-care routine should reflect your unique life and responsibilities. Consider the following:

  • Use slower periods at work to focus on restorative activities.

  • Dedicate one day a week to meet your personal needs.

  • Rise early to carve out peaceful moments before the day begins.

  • Ask for support, such as stepping back from family responsibilities for one day a month.

  • Schedule regular time for self-care, whether it’s a quiet walk, a hobby, or simply unplugging from technology.

4 - Reframe rest and self-care as essential
